Mike you are so true with that statement. Like I mentioned, I might call those people back, I might not have had the need for their services at the moment or seen the potential for me to do business with them. I personally never say to anyone I meet, that I have a lead for them; my referrals are earned. However, the business card is only a tool. What you do, what you say, and how you keep in contact with that person will lead them to remember you or not. At the end of the day, prospecting is all about numbers and volume, getting deals and closing them, is all about building social capital with those select individuals you merit doing business with.

I agree about the importance of exchanging business cards, but I'm also amazed at the number of people who indicate some interest in staying connected - who even suggest they have leads for you and will provide them when they get back to their office - and who don't keep their word.

Then, upon coming back to them proactively, so many of them (not all) have either forgotten the conversation or you sense that the energy and enthusiasm they exhibited at the networking party has vanished.

One wonders if these are people who have specialized in Acting 101 in college?!
